The Shuōwén Seal form of 道(𨖁) dào ‘way/path/road’ combines 辶(辵 chuò) ‘go’ (along a path), and 首(𩠐) shǒu ‘head/begin/lead’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 𡬹, and later also 导/導(𡭎𡭑𧘄) in some senses.
Compare: 道(𨖁) dào ← MC /dɑuʔ/; 头/頭 tóu ← MC /du/; 首(𩠐) shǒu ← MC /ɕjuʔ/ (SBGY); OC 道 /luʔ/, vs. 首 /hljuʔ/ (Baxter:1992).
Older graphs associated with 道 are wr. 衟/衜, and thought to depict a person standing at a 行 ‘crossroads’; the person 首/𩠐 in the crossroads is wr. 𡬹, and at the bottom is 止 ‘foot’ (cf. 𬠿, 𫖠), not 寸 ‘wrist/pulse/measure’; in old inscr. sometimes also assoc. with 导/導(𡭎𡭑𧘄) not 遵(𨗕).
