The Shuōwén Seal form of 方 fāng ‘tandem dugout canoes’ (方​舟) is said to combine two ​舟 zhōu ‘dugout canoes’ (abbrev.), joined together at prow (or side-by-side , 方​舟 in tandem, to form a catamaran, pontoon/platform boat); the horizontal line of the modern forms 方 is curved in the Seal, like ​匚 fāng ‘square vessel/basket’ (abbrev. phonosemantic), over ​刀(​𠚣) dāo ‘knife/cut/carve’ (cf. ​匚/​祊); formerly also wr. ​汸.
