The oldest graphs associated with十 shí ‘ten’ graphs were a single vertical line 丨, or else a dot was added in the middle of 丨; the dot was eventually lengthened, giving shapes like modern 十; old 七 qī ‘seven’ looked like modern 十 shí ‘ten’, so to distinguish 七 from 十, the vertical line of 七(𠀁) qī ‘seven’ became curved, and the horizontal line became oblique.
