The character 面 miàn ‘face’ (9 strokes) is an old character, today also used as the simple form (abbrev.) of 麵 miàn ‘flour’ (20 strokes), omitting the left-side full-form component 麥 (11 strokes).
Note: The simple form 面 ‘flour’ was formerly wr. 麺 (with 麦/麥); in simple-form texts 面 ‘face’ replaces the full form 麵 and also the old/variant form 麪 ‘flour’; cf. 面←麺←麵←麪.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 面(𡇢𠚑靣) miàn ‘person's face’ (面颜) combines 𦣻 shǒu ‘person's head’ (old form of 首 shǒu), and a shape like 囗 wéi ‘enclosing circle’, but not closed at the upper right, just as the outer stroke of the Seal form of 𦣻 is not closed; cf. 囟(𦥓) xìn ‘fontanel’, 面孔 ‘face’.
Note: In SW 面 miàn ‘face (of a person)’ includes 顏 yán ‘the space between the two eyebrows’, and also the 目 ‘eyes’, 鼻 ‘nose’, and 頰 ‘cheeks’.
Older graphs associated with 面 suggest that the enclosing circle may have been intended to depict the eyelids (or skin of the face around the eyes); cf. 脸/臉, 睑/瞼.
