The Shuōwén Seal form of 白(􁔹) bái ‘white’ (color of the west) combines (􀸾) rù ‘enter into’, and (􂘚) èr ‘two’ (the even number of earth, ⚋ / yīn ‘dark/female’); ‘enter/sink into’ indicates yīn ‘setting sun, in the west’, vs. ‘exit, rise from’ (⚊ / yáng ‘rising sun, in the east’); it is said that when the yīn force predominates, it seeks the color white (, 白); the old SW form 𤼽(􁔺𦣺) is unexplained, but resembles (􁣋) yún ‘evenly-distributed’ (in which and ).
Note: In DYC's edition of SW the seal form of 白 was adjusted to better reflect the component analysis (); other texts write the Seal graph with a vertical line (􀃻) over a shape like (􁈏) rì ‘sun’ (ignoring the component analysis).
    Compare: (􀓷) pò ‘approach/near; press/force’ (cf. ), formerly also wr. (􀢓𤽐), ; (􁕤) bó ‘senior/commander; eldest brother’.
Compare: bó ‘to approach the shore, beach/moor (a boat/ship/vessel)’, in which 白 (white-water/breakers), waves breaking onto on the earth/shore ().
Compare: (􀦋) bí ‘nose’; 白(􀦂𪞶􀥿𦣹) zì ‘nose/self’ (formerly also 白/𪞶/ bí, cf. ).
Compare: bī ‘grain/kernel’; / zào ‘acorn’ (/); bó ‘silk/cocoon’; 𡭴/ ‘ray/beam (of light)’; ‘human face’; cf. 白 ‘thumb (pointed thumbnail)’ ().
Note: In Middle Chinese and 白 were homophonous, MC /bak/ (SBGY).
Compare: (􁒯) mào ‘cap, (head) covering’ (cf. ); (􀸰𠓛) jí (); (􁾤𤽄) quán ‘spring (of water)’.
Compare: (􁯾𤆍) chì ‘red’ (color of the south); (􀷋𤯞) qīng ‘green’ (color of the east); (􁯎𪐗) hēi ‘black’ (color of the north); (􂛮) huáng ‘yellow’ (color of the earth).
