The Shuōwén Seal form of 白(􁔹) bái ‘white’ (color of the west) combines 入(􀸾) rù ‘enter into’, and 二(􂘚) èr ‘two’ (the even number of earth, ⚋ 侌/阴 yīn ‘dark/female’); 入 ‘enter/sink into’ indicates 阴 yīn ‘setting sun, in the west’, vs. 出 ‘exit, rise from’ (⚊ 陽/阳 yáng ‘rising sun, in the east’); it is said that when the yīn force predominates, it seeks the color white (阴用事, 物色白); the old SW form 𤼽(􁔺𦣺) is unexplained, but resembles 匀(􁣋勻) yún ‘evenly-distributed’ (in which 勹 and 二).
