The Shuōwén Seal form of 止() zhǐ ‘foot/base/basis’ is said to depict the branching of the foot into toes (like a plant putting forth roots/branches), the base/bottom of 足() zú ‘foot (with calf/leg)’.
Note: 阯 in the SW gloss is the old wr. of 趾; the old shape of 止() is likened to that of 出(岀) chū ‘go/put forth’ (lush/emerging plants).
