The Shuōwén Seal form of 原 yuán ‘source/origin of a river’ (源泉) combines 泉(𤽄) quán ‘water spring’, and 厂 hǎn ‘cliff’: water gushing out from a high mountain plateau (高原) and plunging down the cliff face; formerly wr. 𠫐(厵), with 泉 tripled; later wr. 源.
Note: In 原, the old form of 泉(𤽄) quán has a shape like 小 (not 水) at bottom.
Note: Today mainly 原 yuán ‘source, origin/original’ (as in 原来 ‘originally’); 原 yuán ‘original/raw’ (as in 原料 ‘raw material’), 原 yuán ‘original/primary/fundamental’ (原子 ‘atom’).
