(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 头:) The simple-form character 头 tóu ‘head’ (5 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character 頭 (16 strokes), dropping the left-side full-form component 豆, and replacing the right-side full-form component 頁 with 页, which was later abbrev. to simply 头.
Note: Intermediary simplified forms: 頭⿰豆頁 → ⿰豆页 → ⿰豆头 → 头; the first 2 strokes of 头 corresp. to the first 2 strokes of 页 (cf. 丷 in 𦣻/首 shǒu ‘head’); and the last 3 strokes (like 大) of 头 corresp. to the last 3 strokes of 页.
Note: As a component 头 occurs in several unrelated (to 頭) simplified forms, replacing full-form components with a shape like 貝 at the bottom; although 貝 is not a trad. component of 頁, the last 7 strokes of 頁 are the same; the old abbrev. form 実 is of interest for the origin of the modern simple form 实/實.
