The simple-form character 种 (9 strokes) is an old character (with a different old meaning), later re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 種 zhǒng/zhòng ‘seed/sow’ (14 strokes), replacing the full-form component 重 (9 strokes) with 中 (4 strokes).
Note: Today 种 zhǒng/zhòng ‘seed/sow’, with 中 zhōng/zhòng (phonetic); formerly 种 chóng ‘immature’ (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 種 chóng ‘early-sown/late-ripening grain variety’ combines 禾 (hé) ‘cereal/grain’, and 重(𡍴) zhòng/chóng (phonetic); slow/late-ripening grain must be sown early; formerly wr. 穜 tóng, with 童 tóng ‘slave/child’ (phonosemantic); late-ripening grain, slow like a slave, slow to mature, like a human child.
