The simple-form character 种 (9 strokes) is an old character (with a different old meaning), later re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character zhǒng/zhòng ‘seed/sow’ (14 strokes), replacing the full-form component (9 strokes) with (4 strokes).
Note: Today 种 zhǒng/zhòng ‘seed/sow’, with zhōng/zhòng (phonetic); formerly 种 chóng ‘immature’ (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of chóng ‘early-sown/late-ripening grain variety’ combines (hé) ‘cereal/grain’, and (𡍴) zhòng/chóng (phonetic); slow/late-ripening grain must be sown early; formerly wr. tóng, with tóng ‘slave/child’ (phonosemantic); late-ripening grain, slow like a slave, slow to mature, like a human child.
Note: Formerly / chóng/tóng ‘early-sown/late-ripening grain variety’, and 种 chóng ‘immature’ (← chóng ‘late-ripening’), both now obsolete.
    Compare: zhòng ‘sow (seed)’; (𡍴) zhòng/tóng/chóng, tóng/chóng/zhōng.
