The Shuōwén Seal form of 外 wài ‘remote/outside’ combines ​夕 xī ‘moon/evening’, and ​卜 bǔ ‘(divination) crack’; divination until late into the night, of things remote, far removed from this mortal world; cf. ​閒 jiàn ‘gap/crack’, formerly ​𨳿 with 外 (instead of ​月), in which the ​夕 sliver of crescent moon outside shines in through a ​卜 crack, or represents a spy (​间​谍) outside peering in at night.
