The Shuōwén Seal form of 看 kàn ‘look/see’ combines 手 (shǒu) ‘hand’, and 目 (mù) ‘eye’; hands raised to the forehead shield the eyes from bright sun, so that one can look/see clearly/afar; formerly also wr. 𥉏, with 倝 gàn ‘shining rays of dawn’ (phonosemantic).
Note: SW glosses 看 with 睎 xī (睎望: 眺望, 瞭望; cf. 希望), which is itself glossed 望 wàng ‘look at something (from) far off’.
