The Shuōwén Seal form of 和(咊) hè/hé ‘harmonize/harmony (vocal/musical)’ combines 口(𠙵) kǒu ‘mouth’ (voice), and 禾 hé ‘cereal/grain/food’ (phonosemantic); the combination signifies plentiful grain/food (cf. 禾 as in 利), happiness/song in time of plenty, agrarian/civil harmony; formerly also wr. 𥤉(龢), with 龠 yuè ‘panpipes’ on the left (cf. 合).
Note: In SW 禾 hé ‘cereal/grain’ is said to be 和(咊) hé ‘just right’ (perfect/ripe) for harvest in the eighth month
Note: The modern form is 和, but the Seal form 咊 reverses the components; both forms are attested in old inscriptions.
Compare: 盉 hé ‘liquor blending vessel’, in which 禾 is short for 和(咊) huò ‘mix/blend’.
