The Shuōwén Seal form of 歌() gē ‘sing/chant’ combines 欠 qiàn ‘breathe/yawn (open the mouth wide)’, and 哥() gē (phonosemantic); formerly also wr. 謌(), with 言 yán ‘direct speech’.
Note: In SW 哥() gē is the phonetic component of 歌() gē, and taken to be the earlier writing of gē ‘song’ (note that 可 combines 口 kǒu ‘mouth’ and 丂 qiǎo ‘air/breath/sigh/exclamation’); 哥 (glossed in SW as 声 ‘sound (tune)’) was borrowed for the homophone 哥 (as in 哥哥 gēge ‘brother’, 大哥 dàgē ‘big brother’), and 欠 was added to specify the original meaning ‘song’; cf. 哥.
