The Shuōwén Seal form of 和(​咊) hè/hé ‘harmonize/harmony (vocal/musical)’ combines ​口(​𠙵) kǒu ‘mouth’ (voice), and ​禾 hé ‘cereal/grain/food’ (phonosemantic); the combination signifies plentiful grain/food (cf. ​禾 as in ​利), happiness/song in time of plenty, agrarian/civil harmony; formerly also wr. ​𥤉(​龢), with ​龠 yuè ‘panpipes’ on the left (cf. ​合).
    Note: In SW ​禾 hé ‘cereal/grain’ is said to be 和(​咊) hé ‘just right’ (perfect/ripe) for harvest in the eighth month
    Note: The modern form is 和, but the Seal form ​咊 reverses the components; both forms are attested in old inscriptions.
