The Shuōwén Seal form of 中 zhōng ‘center/middle’ combines 囗 wéi ‘enclosing wall (of a fort/city)’, with a 丨 gǔn ‘vertical line/pole’ through the middle; formerly wr. 𠁧, with a curved central line instead of the straight line; some SW editions include old (籀文) forms like 𠁩/𠁦.
Note: SW classifies 中/𠁧 under radical 丨, along with only one other character, 𣃘 chǎn/chuáng ‘flagpole’; cf. 㫃.
