The Shuōwén Seal form of 二 èr ‘two’ combines a pair of horizontal strokes symbolizing the number two; two is said to be the number of 地 dì ‘earth’ (cf. 土 tǔ), relative to 一 yī ‘one’ the number of 天 tiān ‘heaven’; as a component in other Shuōwén characters, the two lines of 二 èr ‘two’ are said to represent heaven above and earth below, cf. 五(𠄡); enlarged writings (大写) include the old form 弍, and 贰(貳).
