The Shuōwén Seal form of 于(​亏​亐) yú ‘in/out-flow of air/breath’ (​於) is said to combine ​丂 kǎo ‘breath pushing against an obstruction’, and a horizontal line ​一 above representing the measured/even out-flow of breath (​气).
    Note: In old texts ​丂 was sometimes taken to be 于(​亏), and sometimes ​巧; cf. ​号.
    Note: The component 于 is said to be used in the names of ​大 ‘big/surprising’ things; cf. ​芋, ​吁 (DYC).
    Note: 于 was formerly sometimes wr. ​亐/​亏; today ​亏 is used as the simple form (abbrev.) of ​虧 kuī.
    “[于 is] said to be a symbol of an exclamation, analogous to ​丂 qiǎo and ​乎 hū, cf. also ​气 qì” —Karlgren(AD)
    Note: In the modern form 于 the vertical stroke is ​亅, with a hook on the bottom; cf. ​干 gān ‘do’, which lacks the hook, and was rather more different in the Seal.
    Older graphs associated with 于 look more like 于 than ​亏, the components do not seem to be ​丂 and ​一 (HDZ), and in some old forms there is an additional curved line on the left or right reminiscent of ​㢪, or perhaps ​㝼, ​迂; note the old (​诗) glosses of 于 ‘go’.
    Compare: ​於(​𡖗) yú, which is sometimes used in place of 于 among full-form characters; ​於 is still in use among simple-form characters for the surname ​於 Yū.
