The simple-form character 单 (8 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form character (12 strokes), replacing the upper full-form component (6 strokes) with (2 strokes).
Note: In 单/ the simplification of / is that of //; cf. .
The Shuōwén Seal form of 单/ dān ‘great (beast)’ combines the shape (⿱), short for / měng ‘frog/amphibian’ (cf. /), with xuān ‘cry/roar’ (phonosemantic); [lacuna].
Note: is an old wr. of /(𪓸) tuó ‘alligator’, and of / zhàn ‘battle/war’, phonosemantic in both; SW records that alligator skin was used to make (war) drums.
Compare: 𬶛/ tuó ‘alligator’, formerly wr. /(𪓸); 𬶛/ shàn ‘Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus)’.
Compare: /() shòu ‘beast’, in which represents the curved horns, not xuān ‘cry/roar’; but in the Seal the central part of / is the same as 单/.
“[] Single, alone; only; odd (in number); single sheet, a list, a bill, a slip” —Karlgren(AD).
Note: Lindqvist proposed that 单 may have represented hunting stones tied with a rope (cf. bolas/boleadoras); cf. dàn as in zǐdàn ‘bullet’.
    Compare: / tán/dàn ‘shoot/projectile’, formerly wr. 𢎟.
