The Shuōwén Seal form of 解 jiě ‘dehorn; dismember/dissect; analyze’ (判解: 剖解) combines 刀(𠚣) dāo ‘knife’, 牛 niú ‘ox’, and 角(𧢲) jiǎo ‘horn’; to use a knife to dehorn a horned animal, separating the animal from its horns; formerly also 解 xiè (解廌=獬豸), the name of a mythical beast (cf. 豸).
Note: 解 jiě (v.) ‘dismember/dissect (at the joint); analyze; slacken (cf. 懈)’, 解 xiè (n.) ‘joint’ (HDZ); 解 jiě, formerly also wr. 㓩 jiē ‘理角’, 觧.
Note: Horned farm animals (牛科 ‘bovines’, 羊科 ‘ovines’) are dehorned or tipped (the horn tips are blunted) in order to prevent the animals from goring others or harming themselves; the horns can get stuck in brush/fences (cf. ䷡), and curved horns left untrimmed can become ingrown, growing back into the head of the animal; cf. (易) ䷡→䷒ “羝羊觸藩, 羸其角” (cf. 触).
