The Shuōwén Seal form of 能 néng/xióng ‘a bear’ (熊) is said to combine the feet of a 鹿 lù ‘deer’ with 肉(𠕎) ròu ‘flesh/meat’ (the bear is carnivorous/omnivorous, killing/scavenging), and 厶(㠯以) yǐ ‘use’ (phonetic); the bear is a powerful animal, and so the character was used for 能 néng ‘talented/strong/able’ (賢能而彊壯).
Compare: 熊 xióng ‘a kind of bear’ (in which 能 modified by 灬 retains the old meaning; cf. 鸟/鳥).
Note: The Song Dynasty scholar 徐鉉 doubted that 㠯 was phonetic; instead, he thought the character was a pictograph.
