The simple-form character 发 replaces two different full-form characters: ⑴ 髮 fà ‘hair’; ⑵ 發 fā ‘shoot’.

Note: The simple form 发 is an abbrev. of ⑴ 髮 fà ‘hair’: in the full-form character 髮, the top component is 髟, and the bottom component is 犮 (discussed below); in the simple form 发 the 1st segment of the 1st stroke is all that remains of the full-form component 髟 (the bottom 丿 stroke of 彡 corresponds to the first segment of 𠃋 in 发).
