The Shuōwén Seal form of 象(𧰼) xiàng ‘elephant/ivory’ is said to be a pictograph depicting an elephant with long trunk, tusks, large ears, four legs/feet, and tail; the shape ⺈ seems to represent the tusks (and/or trunk), not the mahout (cf. 为); the shape 𫩏/𠔿 at the bottom of (below the tusks) represents the large ears (left and right); the legs/feet and tail are drawn like 𧰨 at the bottom of 豕 shǐ ‘boar/swine/hog/pig’; later wr. 像 in some senses.
Compare: 象 xiàng ‘elephant; ivory; image/symbol/n-gram/omen’ (易) (大象); 像 xiàng ‘be like/similar’.
In old graphs associated with 象, the shape ⺈ corresponds to the trunk (not the tusks).
Compare: 豫(𠄛) yù ‘great/gentle elephant’ (䷏); 为/為(爲𤔡𬊓𫞟), 爲.
Compare: 角(𧢲) jiǎo ‘horn/antler’, 鱼/魚(𤋳) yú ‘fish’ (with the same kind of top, in Song and Seal forms).
“Elephant; ivory; figure cut in ivory, figure, image, form; similar, to resemble; comparison, symbol, model” —Karlgren(1923).
Compare: 像 xiàng ‘image’ (肖像 ‘portrait’), sometimes wr. 象 (好像/象 ‘the picture of ...’)' cf. 相 xiàng ‘watch/observe’ (相/像貌 ‘look/appearance’, 照相/像 ‘photograph’).
Compare: 橡 xiàng ‘oak’, the old wr. was 樣; 橡 xiàng ‘rubber’, as in 橡胶树 ‘India rubber tree’ (象 ‘(Indian) elephant’).
