The Shuōwén Seal form of 且 jū/zǔ ‘sacrificial altar’ (俎 zǔ ‘cutting board’) is said to depict a 几 ‘table/stand/altar’ with feet and 二 two shelves, standing on the 一 ground; the old form 𠀃 lacking the shelves is also guessed to be a wr. of 几.
Compare: 俎 zǔ ‘sacrificial altar; cutting board’; 蒩 zū ‘offering mat/basket’, also wr. 鉏; 诅/詛 zǔ ‘to curse’.
Note: Today mainly 且 qiě ‘for now, temporarily’.
Older graphs associated with 且 (which look rather like a headstone, some with 又 ‘hand’ below) are connected with 祖 zǔ ‘ancestral tablets/temple’ (祖庙; 神主), and esp. with 俎 zǔ ‘sacrificial/festal vessel’; see also 土 tǔ ‘earth’, which has a similar shape in some inscriptions, and is assoc. with 社 shè ‘earth god/lord’.
