The character 良 (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of old forms such as 𣌩 (9 strokes) and 𥭷 (13 strokes); the modern form 良 seems to put a dot atop , but is not a traditional component of 良 (see below).
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 良(􀺆𣌩𣌣) liáng ‘good’ (良) is said to combine (􀺅) fú ‘full/blessed’ (abbrev.), and (􂍷) wáng ‘flee/lose’ (phonosemantic); all good things (blessings) must pass (and so the good is fully recognized/appreciated); formerly also wr. 𥭣(􀺉𥭷), 𡆨(􀺇), 𡰩(􀺈).
    Note: If the old form 𡆨(􀺇) suggests (􀥠) liàng ‘sth. in the eye’ (→ ‘sth. (good/bad) in the eye’ → ‘object of desire’), then the old form 𡰩(􀺈) suggests (􀥹) méi ‘eyebrow/brow’ (squinting), (􂊍𡡾) mèi ‘lovely’; thus the trad. analysis of the main SW form 良(􀺆𣌩𣌣) suggests (􀥭) máng ‘blind’; however, the SW component analysis (⿱) is unconfirmed by inscriptional evidence, and it seems more likely that 良 is connected with xiāng ‘fragrant grain’ (see below); for the top of the old form 𥭣(􀺉𥭷) later wr. , cf. (􁉒􁉓𦠪), (􂠈).
    Compare: 良(􀺆𣌩𣌣) liáng; (􁙷) liáng ‘weigh/measure’ (quantity/quality), /(􁍣) liáng ‘(measure of) grain/cereal’ ← MC /ljɑŋ/ (SBGY).
    Note: The SW phonetic components (recursive): (􁙷) liáng ⇚ (􁈽) xiàng ⇚ (􁈌𨞰) xiāng ⇚ (􀷕) xiāng ‘fragrant grain’ ← MC /xjɑŋ/ (SBGY); cf. (􀈃) láng, (􁍈) liáng.
    Compare: (􁍅𪏽) xiāng ‘fragrant’ ← MC /xjɑŋ/; (􀴙𤮺) gān ‘sweet’ ← MC /kɑm/ (SBGY).
    Compare: (􁊌) lǎng ‘bright/clear (eyes/etc.)’; (􀥠) liàng/lǎng ‘sth. in the eye; eye disease / bright (eyes)’; (􁇛𨝥) láng ‘my dear’ (formerly also wr. 良).
    Note: The bottom of the modern form 良(􀺆𣌩𣌣) only happens to look like (􁙞𥃩) gèn (☶䷳).
