The character 良 (7 strokes) is an abbrev. of old forms such as 𣌩 (9 strokes) and 𥭷 (13 strokes); the modern form 良 seems to put a dot 丶 atop 艮, but 艮 is not a traditional component of 良 (see below).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 良(𣌩𣌣) liáng ‘good’ (善良) is said to combine 畐(畗) fú ‘full/blessed’ (abbrev.), and 亡(亾) wáng ‘flee/lose’ (phonosemantic); all good things (blessings) must pass (and so the good is fully recognized/appreciated); formerly also wr. 𥭣(𥭷), 𡆨(), 𡰩().
Note: If the old form 𡆨() suggests 䀶() liàng ‘sth. in the eye’ (→ ‘sth. (good/bad) in the eye’ → ‘object of desire’), then the old form 𡰩() suggests 眉(睂) méi ‘eyebrow/brow’ (squinting), 媚(𡡾) mèi ‘lovely’; thus the trad. analysis of the main SW form 良(𣌩𣌣) suggests 盲() máng ‘blind’; however, the SW component analysis (⿱畐亡) is unconfirmed by inscriptional evidence, and it seems more likely that 良 is connected with 皀 xiāng ‘fragrant grain’ (see below); for the top of the old form 𥭣(𥭷) later wr. 竹, cf. 昔(㫺𦠪), 俎().
Compare: 良(𣌩𣌣) liáng; 量() liáng ‘weigh/measure’ (quantity/quality), 粮/糧() liáng ‘(measure of) grain/cereal’ ← MC /ljɑŋ/ (SBGY).
Note: The SW phonetic components (recursive): 量() liáng ⇚ 曏() xiàng ⇚ 鄉(𨞰) xiāng ⇚ 皀() xiāng ‘fragrant grain’ ← MC /xjɑŋ/ (SBGY); cf. 莨() láng, 粱() liáng.
Compare: 香(𪏽) xiāng ‘fragrant’ ← MC /xjɑŋ/; 甘(𤮺) gān ‘sweet’ ← MC /kɑm/ (SBGY).
Compare: 朗(朖) lǎng ‘bright/clear (eyes/etc.)’; 䀶() liàng/lǎng ‘sth. in the eye; eye disease / bright (eyes)’; 郎(𨝥) láng ‘my dear’ (formerly also wr. 良).
Note: The bottom of the modern form 良(𣌩𣌣) only happens to look like 艮(𥃩) gèn (☶䷳).
