The Shuōwén Seal form of 己 jǐ ‘circumpolar stars’ (​中​宫) is said to depict winding/turning northern circumpolar stars; the character is also assoc. with a person's belly (navel, ‘center/pole’ of the self); the old variant ​𢀒 joins 5 straight segments; as with the other anc. ​天​干 signs, the derivation is obscure, cf. ​甲.
