The Shuōwén Seal form of 正 zhèng ‘right/correct; (go) straight (ahead)’ combines 止 zhǐ ‘(right) foot; stop’ (phonosemantic), with a straight horizontal line drawn above the toes, marking the boundary at which one must stop (toeing the line), the straight/level continuous/unbroken earth/path which each one must follow; formerly wr. 㱏 with 上(𠄞) ‘above’ (cf. 示, 帝), and also wr. 𧾸 with 足 zú ‘foot’ below (instead of 止).
    Compare: 癶(𣥠) bō ‘step up/on’, in which 止 zhǐ ‘right foot’ is together with 𣥂 tà ‘left foot’; 登(𧰍), 癹, 𤼩(癸).
    Older graphs (OBI) assoc. with 正 look like 𧾸/足 or 是, with a circle 囗 above instead of horizontal line (cf. 止/趾/足 zhǐ/zú ‘toes/foot’).
