The Shuōwén Seal form of 正 zhèng ‘right/correct; (go) straight (ahead)’ combines ​止 zhǐ ‘(right) foot; stop’ (phonosemantic), with a straight horizontal line drawn above the toes, marking the boundary at which one must stop (toeing the line), the straight/level continuous/unbroken earth/path which each one must follow; formerly wr. ​㱏 with ​上(​𠄞) ‘above’ (cf. ​示, ​帝), and also wr. ​𧾸 with ​足 zú ‘foot’ below (instead of ​止).
    Compare: ​癶(​𣥠) bō ‘step up/on’, in which ​止 zhǐ ‘right foot’ is together with ​𣥂 tà ‘left foot’; ​登(​𧰍), ​癹, ​𤼩(​癸).
