The Shuōwén Seal form of 辰(𠨷) chén ‘thunderbolt/shake/shock’ (☳䷲震) is said to combine 乙() yǐ ‘sprout’, 𠤎() huá ‘upside-down/fallen/dead man’ (☳), and 厂() hǎn ‘cliff’ (phonosemantic): the fallen man lies dead at the base of the cliff, and plants sprout up from his corpse.
Compare: 乾(𠄃𠄊) qián/gān ‘rise/dry up’ (☰䷀), pure ⚊ yáng ‘male’, in which also 乙() yǐ ‘sprout’.
Old graphs associated with 辰 depict the tail of the scorpion; 辰 was also used as an abbrev. of more complex graphs depicting the whole Celestial Scorpion; cf. 䢅(), 晨(曟) chén ‘Scorpio/Antares’.
