The Shuōwén Seal form of 目 mù ‘eye’ is said to depict a human eye (人的眼睛); the outside enclosure 囗 represents the ‘eyelids/lashes’, and inside the double horizontal lines 二 represent the ‘iris/pupil’ (瞳子); formerly wr. 𡇡 mù ‘eye’, with a shape like 囗 representing the ‘face (eye socket)’, and inside a shape 入 for the ‘eyebrow/eyelash’ (cf. 睂/眉) over 日 ‘eyeball’ (an old abbrev. form that looks like ‘sun’).
Older graphs associated with 目(𡇡) are horizontal like 罒 (the canthi ‘corners of the eye’ are left and right); this orientation is apparent in some modern compounds (see below).
