The simple-form character 历 (4 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form characters 歷/曆 (16 strokes), replacing the inner full-form components (14 strokes) with 力 (2 strokes).
The full-form character 曆 was formerly wr. 歷, with 止 instead of 日; 歷 itself was formerly wr. 厤, and earlier 秝 (see below).
Note: In simple-form texts the character 历 replaces two full-form characters 歷/曆; in the simple form 历 the inner full-form components 秝 and 止/日 become simply 力 lì (phonetic).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 歷 lì ‘experience/history (calendar/almanac)’, combines 止 zhǐ ‘stop’ (in place/time), and 厤 lì ‘regulate (crops/planting/time)’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. 厤, and earlier 秝 for the succession of 禾 ‘grain’ harvests; later also wr. 曆 ‘(agricultural) calendar/almanac’, with 日 rì ‘sun/day’ (time), and 𠪾 (with 心).
