Originally written , the same as 已 yǐ ‘already’.
The character 以 is a cursive variant of old augmented forms of the character 已(􂥷㠯); in the modern form 以(⿰厶人) the left-side part  (2 strokes) derives from the component 厶, which is an old abbrev. of 已 (as in 台, 允); on the right side of 以 the component 人 was added to distinguish old meanings of 已 later wr. 以/似; cf. 已.
“This very ancient character is supposed to represent the exhalation of the breath, the virtue that emanates from any object, its action, its use. By extension, use till exhaustion, to terminate...” —Wieger.
Compare: 似(􁗢佀) sì ‘similar’; 拟/擬(􂆺) nǐ ‘estimate/guess’; in the simple form 拟, the component 以 replaces 疑.
 also came to be written 㠯󰀁 yǐ, which is an old form of 以. Then  was reduced to 厶, slightly distorted into 𠄌 plus 丶, and for the meaning “use as, consider as”, 人 rén ‘person’ was added to the right side, resulting in 以.
