The character 什 is an old character, reused for the interrogative pronoun 什 shén ‘what’ (什​么) ‘what’; formerly 什 shí ‘ten’, an elaborate (​大​写) wr. of ​十 shí ‘ten’.
    Note: 什​么 shénme ‘what’, (​口​语) 什​么 shéme, in full-form texts sometimes wr. ​甚 shén (​甚/什​麽 shénme), but in simple-form texts only wr. 什 shén ‘what’, vs. ​甚 shèn ‘very’.
