The Shuōwén Seal form of 人 rén ‘person’ is a pictograph, said to sketch a standing person as seen in profile (from one side); the person is facing to the left (east, to a south-facing viewer); the first stroke of the modern character draws the arm, and the 2nd stroke draws the head, body, and leg. This component is doubled in ​从 cóng ‘follow’ (one person after another).
