The Shuōwén Seal form of 下(​丅) xià ‘down below/under’ combines a horizontal line ​一 representing the horizon (surface of the earth, as in ​至), and a vertical line down below signifying ‘down/below’; formerly wr. ​𠄟.
    Compare: ​上(​丄​𠄞) shàng ‘up above/over’, which is the inverse of 下(​丅​𠄟).
    Note: The modern form 下 is like the variant ​丅 with an extra dot (​卜 is not a trad. comp. of 下); some Seal forms of 下󰀁(​丅) have a curved vertical line marked below with the dot; the old form ​𠄟 can be seen as a Seal component; that old form was not used as an independent character in order to avoid confusion with ​二 èr ‘two’.
