The Shuōwén Seal form of 社 shè ‘earth god/spirit’ (​地​主: ​后​土, 社​公) combines ​礻(​示 shì) ‘heavens/ritual’, and ​土 (tǔ) ‘earth’; formerly wr. ​𣒮, with ​𥘅(​示) and a shape like ​杜 dù ‘sweet birch-leaf pear’ (fruit tree of suited to a certain type of earth).
    “Altar to the spirits of the land; sacrifice to the spirits of the land; tutelary deity, village, society — the ​示 religious rites for ​土 the land” —Karlgren(AD).
    Older graphs associated with 社 are said to be variants of ​土, cf. ​土.
