The simple-form character 样 yàng ‘manner/style/kind’ (10 strokes) is an old character, re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character 樣 (15 strokes), replacing the full-form component 羕 (11 strokes) with its top part 羊 (6 strokes).
Note: Both 样 and 樣 are old characters, formerly with different usages; 樣 yàng ‘manner/style/kind’ is an old usage; cf. 象/橡 below, and 洋 yáng ‘foreign’.
The character 样 yáng ‘wooden post’ (part of sericulture frame) combines 木 (mù) ‘tree/wood’, and 羊 yáng (phonetic).
Note: The old meaning 样 yáng ‘wooden post’ is obsolete, and today the reading is 样 yàng ‘manner/style/kind’, used as the simple form of 樣 yàng (note the tone difference, formerly yáng, today yàng).
The Shuōwén Seal form of 樣 xiàng ‘acorn’ (橡) combines 木 (mù) ‘tree/wood’, and 羕 yàng ‘long-flowing river’ (phonosemantic): the hardwood (long-lasting) oak nut; also wr. 象, and later 橡.
