The Shuōwén Seal form of 重(􁙶𡍴) zhòng ‘thick/heavy’ (厚重) is said to combine 𡈼(􁙰𡔛) tǐng ‘stand upright’ (under a burden), and 東(􁂬) dōng ‘east (sunrise; rise/raise)’ (phonosemantic); in the old forms the phonetic component 東 is wr. in the middle of 𡈼(􁙰𡔛).
“The small seal has 人 (rén) at the top, 土 (tǔ) at the bottom and 東 (dōng) phonetic in the middle; this is not original, for an older form is simply a picture of a weighing-machine, see WIEGER” —Karlgren.
Note: The Seal form of 重(􁙶𡍴) suggests a 人 ‘person’ above, and 土 ‘earth’ (gravity) below; a person being weighed on a balance, or a 童 child playing on a seesaw (跷跷板) with 田 central fulcrum; cf. 童.
has no relation to 車(车 chē).
