Originally was just a different way of writing the character 著. Now 著 is mostly written only for the pronunciation zhù, and is written for the other pronunciations; but sometimes 著 is still used rather than 着 among full form characters, regardless of the pronunciation.
The simple-form character seems to have 羊 over 目, or 丷 over 看, but 着 is really an abbrev. of 著, formerly wr. 箸(􀲙).
着 seems to have more pronunciations and meanings than any other Chinese character (except perhaps for 和). Don’t be discouraged. Even native Chinese speakers can’t always get it straight, especially the distinction between 着 zháo and 着 zhuó. For example, a friend of mine says 着陆 as zháolù though the dictionaries say zhuólù. The dictionaries disagree on whether 着 in 不着边际 (‘not to the point’) should be zháo or zhuó. On the other hand, the distinction between 着 zhe (progressive suffix) and 着 zháo (as in 用不着) really is important.
Note: The different forms 着/represent attempts to distinguish old usages of 箸(􀲙); today the distinction in simplified texts is mostly zhù ‘write, writings/book’, vs. 着 for the other pronunciations; sometimes 著 is used rather than 着 among full form characters, regardless of the pronunciation; cf. 箸.
Note: The character 着 seems to have more pronunciations and meanings than any other common Chinese character (except perhaps for 和); even native Chinese speakers sometimes disagree on the distinctions; for ex., some people say 着陆 zháolù though the dictionaries say it should be 着陆 zhuólù; dictionaries disagree on whether 着 in 不着边际 ‘not to the point’ should be zháo or zhuó; but the distinction between 着 zhe (progressive suffix) and 着 zháo (as in 用不着) is important.
Compare: 看 kàn ‘see’; 者 zhě ‘nom. suf.’.
