The Shuōwén Seal form of 弟 dì ‘successive (turns, wrapping/binding)’ is said to depict successive (次弟=次第) turns of string wound on a spool; the old form 𠂖 combines 𣍄 abbrev., which is the old form of 韋 wéi ‘bind/wind’ (围绕), with an extra stroke 丿 piě/yì (phonetic), cf. 弋 yì.
Compare: 绨/綈 tí ‘heavy silk’.
Note: 弟 dì ‘successive (turns); succession (one after another); younger brother (after the elder brother)’; cf. 兄 xiōng ‘elder brother’.
Compare: 第 dì ‘order/sequence’ (as in 第二 ‘second’ etc.), in which a variant of 弟 dì ‘younger brother’ combines with 竹 zhú ‘bamboo’.
Note: 弟 writes 第 in the SW entry for 弟, but DYC added an entry for 第 to his edition based on an old citation of SW.
