The Shuōwén Seal form of 兄 xiōng ‘elder (brother)’ (兄长) combines 口 (kǒu) ‘mouth/speak’, and 儿(人 rén) ‘person’: a person grown/standing tall, and able to speak/sing forth volubly/authoritatively (the elder brother learns to speak before his younger siblings, and helps teach them).
Note: The SW gloss with 长/長(𨱗) cháng/zhǎng ‘grown tall’ relates to the word 兄长 (哥哥; (尊称) 同辈男子间); also, the OC rhymes of 兄 and 長 were similar; the 口 mouth component is assoc. (小雅) with 永歎 (咏叹), cf. 祝.
