The Shuōwén Seal form of 兄 xiōng ‘elder (brother)’ (兄) combines (kǒu) ‘mouth/speak’, and ( rén) ‘person’: a person grown/standing tall, and able to speak/sing forth volubly/authoritatively (the elder brother learns to speak before his younger siblings, and helps teach them).
Note: The SW gloss with /(𨱗) cháng/zhǎng ‘grown tall’ relates to the word 兄 (; () ); also, the OC rhymes of 兄 and were similar; the mouth component is assoc. () with (), cf. .
“The person with speaking authority (towards the younger)” —Karlgren(AD).
Compare: 兄 xiōngdì ‘brothers’; gēge ‘elder brother’; dìdi ‘younger brother’.
Compare: zhù ‘shaman/warlock/priest’ (in which 兄 is assoc. with ); zhù ‘percussion instrument’.
    Compare: () yuè ‘joy’ (/); / shuō ‘narrate/expound’; / yuè ‘go through (inventory/count; experience)’.
    Compare: , / kuàng; huǎng ‘crazy/insane/furious/violent’.
    Compare: xiōng ‘fearful/violent’, , (𦙄) xiōng ‘chest/breast’.
Note: ‘Communist Party’; 兄 xiōng ‘Big Brother’ is not a trad. comp. of (cf. · Orwell, 1984).
    HDZ: 兄 : xiōng : (兄, 兄; cf. : 兄); (兄); () (兄, 兄) • kuàng : : (, (cf. ); () ); (huǎng)
