The Shuōwén Seal form of 後 hòu ‘late/tardy’ combines 彳 chì ‘left footstep’ (as in 彳亍 chìchù ‘walk slowly’), 幺 yāo ‘small/tiny’, and 夊 suī ‘walk slowly/leisurely’: the young/small move/walk slowly, and so come late (older people having been born first and being stronger walkers arrive/come first, younger ones come later); formerly wr. 𨒥, with 辶(辵) ‘go’, instead of 彳.
Note: 後 ‘late/tardy’ → ‘later/after’.
