(Explanation from the entry for the simple form ​历:) The simple-form character ​历 (4 strokes) is an abbrev. of the full-form characters 歷/​曆 (16 strokes), replacing the inner full-form components (14 strokes) with ​力 (2 strokes).
    The full-form character ​曆 was formerly wr. 歷, with ​止 instead of ​日; 歷 itself was formerly wr. ​厤, and earlier ​秝 (see below).
    Note: In simple-form texts the character ​历 replaces two full-form characters 歷/​曆; in the simple form ​历 the inner full-form components ​秝 and ​止/​日 become simply ​力 lì (phonetic).
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 歷(​􀑫) lì ‘experience/history (calendar/almanac)’, combines ​止(​􀑥) zhǐ ‘stop’ (in place/time), and ​厤(​􁥿) lì ‘regulate (crops/planting/time)’ (phonosemantic); formerly wr. ​厤(​􁥿), and earlier ​秝(​􁌹) for the succession of ​禾(​􁋕) ‘grain’ harvests; later also wr. ​曆 ‘(agricultural) calendar/almanac’, with ​日 rì ‘sun/day’ (time), and ​𠪾 (with ​心).
