(Explanation from the entry for the simple form 转:) The Shuōwén Seal form of 转/轉() zhuǎn ‘return; turn round’ combines 车/車 (chē) ‘cart’ (with turning wheels), and 专/專() zhuān ‘ceramic spindle’ (phonosemantic).
Compare: 抟/摶() tuán ‘roll sth. up into balls’; 团/團() tuán ‘round (ball/lump)’.
Note: Both 转 zhuǎn/zhuàn verbs can be intransitive or transitive; the meanings ‘turn’ and ‘spin/rotate’ are sometimes hard to distinguish (in English at least), and some words such as 转动 have both readings; 转 zhuǎn ‘turn’ (both lit. and fig.) occurs in many more compounds (510 in ABC, to date); 转 zhuàn occurs in fewer compounds (only 86), mainly in the sense of ‘rotate/spin (literal rotation about an axis)’, though there is also fig. usage, as in 转转 ‘go for a spin/stroll’.
