The simple form 还 (7 strokes) is an old character, re-used as an abbrev. of the full-form character ​還 (16 strokes), replacing the full-form component ​睘 (13 strokes) with ​不 (4 strokes).
    Note: In the simple form 还, the full-form component ​睘 is abbrev. to a shape like ​不 (rather like the last few strokes of ​睘).
    The full-form character ​還 is itself an abbrev. of older forms such as ​𨘣 (18 strokes), replacing the old component ​瞏 (15 strokes) with ​睘 (13 strokes); the central part ​土 (3 strokes) is replaced with one of its horizontal strokes ​一 (1 stroke).
