The character 的 de (grammatical particle) is an old form, formerly 的 dì ‘target/goal’ (​目的), re-used for 的 de (gr. part.), in some senses replacing old ​之 zhī.
    Note: 的 is the most common Chinese character, usually 的 de ‘of; X's; etc.’, but less often also 的 dì/dí; see below ⑴, ⑵, ⑶.
    The Shuōwén Seal form of 的(​旳) dì ‘(bright/white bull's-eye) target’ combines ​白 bái ‘white’ (formerly ​日 rì ‘sun/bright’), and ​勺 dì ‘bull's-eye with arrow’ (phonosemantic).
    Note: In 的 the left-side component was once ​日 rì ‘sun/bright’, not ​白 bái ‘white’; the form with ​白 was invented to distinguish the grammatical usages, but later that distinction was lost; the right side of 的 looks like ​勺 ‘spoon’, but was really ​勺/的/​㢩 dì ‘bull's-eye with arrow’ (arrow hitting the center of an archery target).
    Compare: ​智(​𥏼) zhì ‘wisdom’, ​知 zhī ‘know/knowledge’; both of these characters use archery metaphors.
