The Shuōwén Seal form of 四 sì ‘four’ is said to depict the division of an object into four quarters (the quartering of something); it combines ​ wéi ‘surround’ (representing four city walls, one at each of the fours quarters), and ​ bā ‘divide/even’ (⚋); formerly also wr. ​𠃢(​𦉭), ​, and later ​(​𨽸).
    Old graphs associated with 四(​𠃢𦉭) sì ‘four’ are best understood in relation to ​ liù ‘six’, in which the lower component is also ​ bā ‘divide/eight’ (⚋), cf. ​.
