The Shuōwén Seal form of 四 sì ‘four’ is said to depict the division of an object into four quarters (the quartering of something); it combines 囗 wéi ‘surround’ (representing four city walls, one at each of the fours quarters), and 八 bā ‘divide/even’ (⚋); formerly also wr. 𠃢(𦉭), 亖, and later 肆(𨽸).
