Very old graphs associated with 虎 were pictographs (HDZ), depicting the animal with feet/claws to the left, head and gaping jaws above, and long tail below; forms in which the body has stripes obviously depicted a tiger (and not some other large cat); in later ages the character became stylized and its interpretation became less clear; the upper part 虍 was not originally an independent character, but just an abbreviation of 虎 (as in 虑/慮, 虏/虜); the lower part of 虎, written 几 in the modern form (儿 in old forms), suggests a man-eating tiger, or else a tiger rearing up on its hind legs.
The Shuōwén Seal form of 虎 hǔ ‘tiger’ is said to combine 虍 hǔ ‘striped tiger pelt’ (phonosemantic), over 儿 representing the hind legs (upon which the tiger rears up, standing erect like a man); old forms such as 𠪳 and 𪊖 suggest a 鹿 lù ‘deer’ (the tiger's prey) caught in the claws of the tiger; the claws are written 𦥑 or 勿, as in old writings of 革(𠦶) gé ‘hide/pelt’.
