The Shuōwén Seal form of 候(​𠊱) hòu ‘scout/watch/spy’ combines ​人 rén ‘person’ (scout/sentry/watchman), and ​侯(​矦) hóu ‘archery target’ (phonosemantic).
    Note: The scout/sentry/spy presents the enemy with a moving target, keeping patient watch (at sentry post, or lying in wait), making regular rounds (at timed intervals), to track enemy positions/movements (assess the climate).
