The Shuōwén Seal form of 四(􂤐) sì ‘four’ is said to depict the division of an object into four quarters (the quartering of something); it combines 囗(􁃰) wéi ‘surround’ (representing four city walls, one at each of the fours quarters), and 八(􀋮) bā ‘divide/even’ (⚋); formerly also wr. 𠃢(􂤑𦉭), 亖(􂤒), and later 肆(􁧏𨽸).
