The Shuōwén Seal form of 二 èr ‘two’ combines a pair of horizontal strokes symbolizing the number two; two is said to be the number of dì ‘earth’ (cf. tǔ), relative to yī ‘one’ the number of tiān ‘heaven’; as a component in other Shuōwén characters, the two lines of 二 èr ‘two’ are said to represent heaven above and earth below, cf. (𠄡); enlarged writings () include the old form , and ().
Compare: (𠄹) jí; (𢛢𠄨) héng; (𠄭) gèn/gèng; (𠄢) xuān; zhú; fán (all classified under 二 in SW).
Compare: tǔ ‘earth’ (in which 二 represents the surface and interior of the earth); jīn ‘metal; gold’ (in which is the bottom component, with two nuggets).
    Compare: ⚋☷䷁ Kūn ‘earth’ (); ☵䷜ Kǎn ‘water’ (), ䷽ Xiǎo Guò (☵ enlarged); qiàn ‘yawn’ (), qì ‘air/breath’.
二 èr is the seventh of the 214 radicals.
